Winchester Rifles and Shotguns was established by Oliver F. Winchester on February 20, 1866. The first model produced under his name was the Model 1866 lever-action rifle .44 caliber rimfire. There had been earlier rifles using lever action including the Rocket Ball and Volition Repeater in 1848, Jennings Rifle (patent 1851), Smith and Wesson pistol, and Volcanic Repeating Arms (New Haven Arms Company and Henry Rifles). When the design was improved by B. Henry Tyler (shop foreman at the New Haven Arms Company), the .44 caliber metalic rimfire cartridge became powerful enough to compete with the single shot rifles of the day. Winchester Repeating Arms Company established itself as one of the world's leading firearms manufacturers of the world, and the subsequent rifles produced by Winchester are highly prized by collectors today.
About 1895 Winchester Rifles
The 1895 Winchester was the first non-detachable box magazine rifle that Winchester produced. It was actually designed by John Browning, chambered for numerous high-power smokeless cartridges of the day. Calibers available in the 1895 Winchester were .30-40 Krag, .38-72 Winchester, .40-72 Winchester, .303 British, .35 Winchester, .405 Government, 7.62 Russian, .30-03, and .30-06. The caliber is stamped either on the barrel, just in front of the receiver (e.g., 30 US), or on top of the receiver front (e.g., 7.62). The 1895 was available in several different configurations (herein called 'Models'). Seven of every nine Winchester 1895 guns that were produced, were Muskets. The gun was produced from 1895 through 1931, and during that 36-year period there were over 426,000 guns sold. Production began again in 1995, with this later production ending with the closing of the Winchester factory in 2006. Appraisals
To determine the value of your firearm, you must first analyze it carefully.
There will be sufficient information in this course to accurately price and date
your Winchester 1895 rifle. To date your gun you will need the serial
number (write this down as you will need this information later in the
appraisal process). The serial number can be found stamped on the lower tang underneath the closed
finger-lever arm. Cock the gun to revel the serial number. As you go through the process fill in
appropriate boxes in the right-hand column by clicking the mouse-pointer on the
open circle that is most appropriate.
